Jimmy Choo - a true inspiration November 18, 2015 16:25
This week I had the immense privilege of meeting one of my personal heroes and fashion icon, Professor Jimmy Choo, at a lunch hosted by Westpac.
Choo has long been an inspiration to me, and getting to see him in person was both humbling and moving.
At the event, Choo shared the story of how he created his business from humble beginnings in his family shoe shop in the back streets of Malaysia to develop into an iconic brand.
What really resonated with me was his message that if you did what you loved, you will never be poor. If you do something you really love, money will come from that.
He also shared how if you love your customers and do what makes them happy, you will create a wonderful business.
By following his passion for his work and his customers, Choo went from making his first pair of shoes at the age of 11 to the becoming a global icon at the top of the fashion world.
I also loved how Choo now devotes much of his time to training up-and-coming designers – it is amazing to see someone of his stature willing to pass on his knowledge to the next generation.
I felt a very personal connection with Choo’s story and philosophy as my own business career evolved in very much the same way. I did not set out to run a professional makeup academy or cosmetics brand – I just followed my passions and it grew organically into something I love.
Choo’s story clearly also struck a chord with other guests at the event. I shared a table with Tim Phin, publisher of Remix Magazine, and his own success building Remix into a globally-recognised brand is another great example of what can be achieved if you follow your passion.
So do what you love and the rest will follow!
